Who said dirt cannot float?

 

 

We took a boat tour of Inle lake with a very cool independent guide named Nyu Nyu. She took us to see one of the famous floating gardens of Inle Lake. These things actually do float!

 

 

Basically, locals pile reeds mud and other floating plants on the surface of the lake and then cover them with layers upon layers of dirt and more floating debris. Once a good foundation has been laid, plants can be grown on the gardens. Nyu Nyu pointed out that some of the floating farms may be 200 years old!
