April 19th to June 15th, 2014

Two months in Indonesia is not nearly enough time to explore this vast country. During our stay we managed to visit too many islands to count, but really only a tiny fraction of what this place has to offer.

Our first month was spent entirely in Sumatra where we took advantage of some of Indonesia's best nature. Afterwards, we made it to Lombok island then Flores island via Gilli T, Komodo and Ringa islands, before returning to Lombok for a week of surfing.

March 15th to April 12th, 2014

We made loads of videos in Vietnam ranging from the Mekong Delta, up the coast through Hoi An and Hue, into the caves of Phong Nga, on the streets of Hanoi, in the mountains of Sapa and on a boat in Halong Bay. Vietnam is a cool country with lots to see and do, although one month is probably not even close to enough time to really get to see this place!

February 18th to March 15th, 2014

We took a different pace in Cambodia than we had taken in most of the other countries we have visited, spending several days relaxing and viewing the dolphins in Kratie, then visiting the temples of Ankor at a leasurly pace, before heading down to the coast. John’s parents joined us for most of our stay and we had a wonderful time exploring this beautiful country that remains very much today haunted by its recent past.

January 24th to February 18th, 2014

We chose to focus our time in Northern Laos in order to see the jungle and tribal villages around Muong Sing, explore the Nam Ou river and eventually spend some time in Luang Prabang. Our trip included a stay at the Elephant Conservation Centre and a motorbike ride around the Bolovine pleteau in southern Laos.

Laos was remarkable for its mix of rapid development, isolated towns and villages and splendid topography!

January 7th to January 24th, 2014

It is funny to have included two sections on Thailand on this blog, as before leaving this was one of the countries that we had not planned on visiting! One of the running jokes among many of the other travellers we have met is that Thailand is so good at tourism that it is extremely difficult to come to SE Asia and not step foot in here, even if only for a few days.

This second time around we chose to concentrate on the central part of north-western Thailand, where we spent most of our time in Chaing Mai (catching up on emails after a month in Myanmar) and volenteering on an organic farm in the region.

December 11th, 2013 to January 7th, 2014

How to explain Myanmar... Isolated for so long and only recently opening up to the outside world, Myanmar is rich in cultural experience both on and off the beaten path. Our journey included stays in some of the remarquably beautiful tourist areas of Inle Lake and Bagan, but also took us further afeild into the northern mountains of Shan State and some of the little frequequented logging towns of central Myanmar.

The contact one can have with the Myanmar people is the most fulfilling aspect of travelling here as they are friendly, welcoming and curious about the rest of the world.

November 20th to December 11th, 2014

Not originally a destination on our Asia tour, Thailand turned out to be the best place to make the move from Northern Asia to South East Asia, as we were able to get a cheap flight from Beijing to Bangkok. Our initial plan to only stay a few days before heading off to Myanmar expanded to nearly three weeks as we found cheap tickets from Bangkok to Rangoon on the 11th of December. With 20 days to kill we decided to take advantage of some of what this country has to offer.

October 28th to November 20th, 2013

October 2nd to 28th, 2014

The first major destination on our journey, Mongolia will without a doubt remain one of the most unique places we will have visited and may be hard to rival in adventure, interest, culture and history. Our month in Mongolia could have easily transformed into two or three months, but as October drew to a close and winter storms became more frequent, we decided to leave the country at a reasonable date.

September 25th to October 2nd, 2014

Russia was a bit too quick of a stop for our liking. We were in a hurry to get into Mongolia for the Eagle festivl, so most of our stay here consisted of a night in Moscow, four days on the Trans-Siberian, and a quick stop in Lake Bikal via Ulan Ude.

We did manage to have some great experiences and we definately plan on coming back to see more.
